Plymouth needs a new voice representing it is Westminster. Matthew is passionate about Plymouth's heritage as a key British naval base. His foremost objective will be to raise the city's profile in Westminster to promote the traditional industries as well as seeking to build on these in growing areas such as marine research.
Key to Plymouth's prosperity and its attraction as a tourist heritage site is the naval base and dockyard. Matthew will focus on ensuring that the dockyard and naval base get a fair deal from central government. He is also keen to restore the Military covenant that has so badly been abused in recent years to ensure our forces are properly looked after. This can be achieved by more joined up Government between the Ministry of Defence and the Department of Health.
Essential to the future of Plymouth is the implementation of a transport strategy that sees travel times to London dropping below 3 hours. Matthew is in discussion with First Great Western trains to better understand how the service to Plymouth can be improved.
Plymouth is ideally placed to benefit from investment in marine research. The growing importance of research into marine ecology and the harnessing of wave power need to be exploited and promoted to benefit the people of Plymouth. Matthew sees opportunities here to promote the city as a centre of excellence.
